Unfinished Business
UNFINISHED BUSINESS... On Thursday, January 7, 2021, I qualified to continue to serve you as Ridgeland Alderman at Large, and fight shoulder to shoulder with you to stop this absurd garbage dump!!! We have made great strides since I joined the fight in 2008 as your Madison County Supervisor, and continuing the fight as your Alderman at Large since February 2012! In 2010-12, we could not get Ridgeland to join us in opposition to the dump. They were being given false information by some members of the Board of Supervisors who supported the dump. So, we had a small group of fighters in 2011 and 2012 but we had DEQ, and Hinds County, on our side in opposing the proposed dump, and the DEQ Permit Board denied the permit application in Nov 2012 due to setback distances! We thought the dump was dead forever!
Now the staff at DEQ has flip flopped and support the dump with reduced setback distances that do not meet guidelines! It’s all about greed for political contributions, and not about need!!! Sadly, many politicians are looking out for what is best for them, and not what is best for those who elected them!
In January 2008, the Madison County Board of Supervisors hired Eric Hammer to serve as the Board ATTORNEY; previously Eric had served as the attorney for the developer of the dump! Also, the Board of Supervisors hired one of the current developers of the dump to update the Madison County Solid Waste Plan, which established the need for the dump! In the calculations for need, the contractor used numbers twice the national average to estimate residential waste for Madison County households, and no consideration of recycling!
It is hard to win against this kind of corruption and cronyism political decisions. Two members of the Board of Supervisors have voted for the dump numerous times since as early as 1998... Karl Banks and Paul Griffin, who now serve as the President and Vice President of the Madison County BoS! Karl is currently doing everything he can to get the dump approved!
I’ve committed to doing everything humanly possible and legal to stop this proposed dump! The City of Ridgeland has Annexed the proposed dump area, and an appeal to that case is currently before the State Supreme Court.
Tuesday night, the City of Ridgeland Aldermen voted to not be included in the Madison County Solid Waste Plan, those reducing the County solid waste disposal need by approximately 25% since our garbage goes to Scott County! Again, reducing the need for any more dumps Madison County!!!
This is not over... So we are not through yet! I want to keep working for you in helping fight this environmental injustice!

Are you a VET? Get VET Designation on your Mississippi Drivers License
Mississippi has issued its first driver's license designed for military veterans.
The presentation was made Thursday at a Highway Patrol office in Pearl.
Officials say Mississippi is one of 16 states offering a "veteran" designation on driver's licenses and other state-issued documents.
There are approximately 200,000 veterans who call Mississippi home.
Certification from the Mississippi Veteran's Affairs Board must be presented before the new veteran's license can be obtained. Click this link to print the instructions to obtain "certification" by the Veterans Affairs Board.
Veterans who wish to obtain the credential in advance of the normal renewal period must pay the associated replacement fees to get the document. Any subsequent documents an enrolled veteran receives from the Department of Public Safety will have the "veteran" designation.

Landfill Permit DENIED

Today after nearly 4 hours of listening to presentations and discussion by the DEQ STAFF, the NCL Landfill developer's legal and engineering staff, and concerned citizens, the Mississippi Environmental Quality Permit Board voted to accept the recommendation of the DEQ Staff for a 500' setback distance, and denied the proposed permit application! So unless this decision is overturned in the courts, the proposed NCL Municipal Landfill is dead.
This process started 12 years ago when the developer approached the Madison County Board of Supervisor asking to rezone the property to allow a landfill!
It has already been to the Supreme Court once when the Madison County Solid Waste Management Plan was amended to add the proposed landfill. The Madison County Plan had been approved by the Mississippi Commission on Environmental Quality with the recommendation that Permit Board consider and require a greater than 500' setback...
The "need" for an additional landfill and environmental discrimination have not been fully analyzed and were not part of today's decision.

"THE WILLIAM LEE MONTJOY" POOL SAFETY ACT signed by Governor
The Governor signed "THE WILLIAM LEE MONTJOY" POOL SAFETY ACT yesterday. This bill applies to every Apartment and Homeowner or Property Owner Association with a pool. There is a grandfather provision for existing pools, however there are some required modifications to ALL pool gates and locking systems which must be completed by January 1, 2013. See SECTION 5.
This bill was passed UNANIMOUSLY by the SENATE, and 107-12 by the HOUSE. Here is a link to the complete bill status and all the versions, etc.

Ridgeland -- D.I. Smith has officially announced his campaign for election as City of Ridgeland Alderman at Large.
D.I. pledges to maintain his commitment to low taxes, open government and job creation. “We have a great city because our neighborhoods are strong, our business climate is favorable and our taxes are affordable.” “As your next Alderman at large, I want to build on these strengths while making Ridgeland greater through the South East Ridgeland Redevelopment and protecting our property values through strong code enforcement and being proactive in fighting crime."
D.I. earned the reputation as a watchdog for taxpayers over the last four years when he helped raise awareness about property taxes in Madison County and provided online resources for taxpayers and to stay informed about issues in the community.
Smith was a champion of homeowner issues as a member of the Madison County Board of Supervisors. He led the fight to renew curbside recycling for the County and helped subdivisions get speedbumps, signage and additional traffic calming measures, and DI took the lead on informing property owners about the new FEMA flood maps, allowing effected subdivisions and property owners to take timely action to avoid massive increases in their property insurance costs.
DI Smith is a member of the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership, Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce, the City of Madison Chamber, the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, Military Officers Association of America, Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association, Army Aviation Association of America, the Army War College Alumni Association, and the Madison-Ridgeland American Legion Post. He has also done extensive research, writing and speaking about programs affecting the military.
D. I. and his wife, Linda, are members of Highland Colony Baptist Church, Ridgeland, MS; where DI also serves as a Deacon.

2011 Property Tax Bills
Back in July 2011, I reminded everyone to examine and inspect your property records. Now the tax bills based on those property rolls are going in the mail.
The Madison County Tax Collector, Kay Pace, will mail the 2011 Property Tax Notices today (Nov 1, 2011). The notices are mailed to the property owners as of Jan 1, 2011. Anyone who has purchased property during 2011 may have to contact the previous owner or the Tax Collector to get a copy of their tax bill.
If unpaid, damages accrue after February 1, 2012 at the rate of 1% per month.

The 2011 Tax Rolls and information on your property can be found at the Madison County Tax Assessors web site under "Land Roll Express Search."
